Janice Steed RGN RM ADM MSc

Janice is a Member of the LeaderShape Specialist Healthcare Team.

With over 30 years experience working with the NHS and Local Authorities as a clinician, a leader (with 12 years experience at Board level) of high performing teams, facilitator of major programmes of change and now as an organisation consultant and executive coach, Janice has a deep understanding of the context, complexity and range of relationships within the Health Service. She has a particular emphasis on helping to build effective clinical and managerial partnerships, supporting individuals, teams and organisations through change.

Accreditations & expertise

After qualifying as a nurse in Glasgow Janice worked and travelled abroad returning to London where she trained and practiced as a Community Midwife, undertaking an advanced diploma in Midwifery and introducing ‘Team Midwifery’; beginning her passion for clinical leadership and organisation development.

Business Experience

As an RCM representative, with time spent as a member of the national council, Janice became interested in management, subsequently being selected and undertaking the NHS management training scheme, after which she supported the introduction of clinical directorates and spent time as a general manager of critical care services before taking up her first director post. A number of director level posts followed in both provision and commissioning including a joint post with Suffolk County Council. Janice has also spent time with the Strategic Health Authority leading on choice, patient and public engagement and PCT development.

Janice left the NHS in 2007, where she was a Director of Strategic Development and Commissioning for Cambridgeshire PCT, working closely with Cambridge University Hospitals Foundation Trust, to pursue her interest in organisation consulting and executive coaching. Janice has now successfully completed her MSc in Organisation Consulting, gaining experience in a number of approaches to organisation development such as Appreciative Inquiry, and trained as an executive coach with Ashridge Business School.

Through associate roles and as an independent consultant, facilitator and executive coach Janice has worked with a range of organisations and individuals bringing together her clinical, commissioning and organisation development experience to work as a critical friend and partner in support of leadership development and change.

Notably, as an associate with Partnerships UK who specialise in bringing commercial capability into the public sector, she has supported a number of Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) with their transformational change programmes for community health services; as they relinquish the services they provide to establish independent organisations, separate their corporate services and build effective commissioning organisations. In this she has worked with clinical staff, commissioning teams, PCT boards and executive teams, as they change their identity and culture, from the provision of services, to commissioning from a market place.
