FIRO-B Fundamental Interpersonal Relations Orientation–Behaviour

Originally developed in the late 1950’s by Will Schultz, a former US Navy Officer, FIRO-B was used initially to determine the likely impact of differing behavioural patterns amongst submariner and naval crews.

The instrument gives valuable insights into the needs individuals bring to their relationship with others.

It measures how a person typically behaves towards others and how that person would like others to behave towards them.

FIRO-B is a valuable leadership tool for Team Building and Development, Conflict Resolution, Assessment of individuals and teams and for supporting Coaching and Mentoring interventions at all levels.

FIRO-B posits that in interpersonal relationships people differ from one another in two ways: Expressed behaviour towards others and Wanted behaviour back from others. Further, there are three Needs everyone has in varying degrees.

INCLUSION:

Trying to belong to social groups or to include others in one’s own activities (expressed).

AND needing others to invite one, being noticed (wanted).

CONTROL:

Exerting control and influence, organising and directing others (expressed).
AND working in well defined situations, requiring clear expectations and instructions (wanted).

AFFECTION or OPENNESS (Emotional Involvement):

Getting close to people, being supportive and comfortable with expressing personal feelings (expressed).

AND wanting others to show warmth, enjoying others showing their feelings, being encouraged (wanted).

The FIRO-B questionnaire is simple to complete and takes no more than fifteen minutes. It can also be scored quickly which means feedback can be given almost immediately. It assesses the relative importance of the six behaviours above and explains the strategies people demonstrate to ensure their needs are met.
Feedback improves self-awareness and enables people to see how they are perceived by others and why this may be different to the impression they think they are making.

Understanding the three basic needs and how they are either exhibited or met provides valuable insight for Leaders into working relationships and the impact of different behaviours.

Effective leadership also encompasses Visibility, Team Management, Decision making and Communication – all behaviours highlighted in FIRO-B and which can be enhanced and explored in greater depth in conjunction with the Myers Briggs Type Indicator.

It is generally accepted that the combined diagnostics of FIRO-B and MBTI are still amongst the most effective psychometric tools after nearly 50 years’ continual administration, globally.

"The FIRO-B questionnaire was very valuable and the most meaningful part of the day for me. It helped me to understand myself and my colleagues better, what makes different people tick and that we do not place the same importance on the same things."
